Sealed Bottom Bracket Axle

ConsTake your luck on quality
ProsNever have to hook out bearing fragments again
A nice solution to the problem of sourcing good quality conventional cups and bearings for my 1938 Holdsworth, although quality control is suspect. The first had a faulty bearing (replaced promptly by SJS) but the thread on the cup of the second unit is so badly cut and undersized it simply fell out. While the last 70 years have seen some inevitable wear on the frame the original (but damaged) cups screw in just fine. A nice idea, poorly executed.

I recommend this product
Part was not in stock but email updated worked great. The bottom bracket came with metallic cup. Only problem with part is that the standard ice or park bottom bracket tool does not fit due to the length of the drive spindle.

ConsLoss of originality
ProsWill never need to butcher the cups to get them out again
I'm restoring a 1950s Rudge and decided to compromise on originality in order to get the maintenancefree advantages of a sealed unit. The cost compares favourably with what some "old cycle" specialists charge for wellmade conventional cups and bearings, and since the Rudge still has a chain case, you need to look hard to spot the difference.

I was really happy to find this product as I couldn't get original cup & spindle BB to fit. Thanks for stocking a very niche, but indispensable product!

What is the threading?
By

I have a frame with Left hand thread on one side, and right hand thread on the other. Is this the same, or a symmetrical thread?
This uses what is referred too as an English thread, which will suit your frame. SK 10/11/23
1968 BSA

Hi, I have a 1968 BSA road bike which has a cottered bottom bracket and need to know if this would fit? If you require some dimensions from the old parts/bike then please ask. Regards Kev
We simply would not know. We would need to confirm multiple details about the frame and then the cotter measurements.

does this require a special tool to install?

This requires the standard bb tool such as - SJS Cycles part number : 22227

Do I need specific cotter pins to work with these spindles?
By
28 Aug 2018
I am looking to use with the original chainset for a Moulton F frame. Whilst the B.B. has fitted well, the shape of the spindle flats does not appear to give enough room for the cotter pins to fit far enough for the screw head to emerge even with filing. Do you have any suggestions?
Unfortunately we have no experience of this set up and combination of parts.

Thanks
What is the bearing size?

Is the spindle centred on the shell?
By
01 Oct 2017
I am looking for a replacement where the spindle sticks out more on the chainring side than on the LHS. The spindle length is /- the same as this sealed unit, but on the one that I am replacing the centre between bearing faces is c. 6cm from one end of the spindle and 7.5cm from the 'drive' end. Will this fit?
It is not symmetrical but the long side is only 3mm longer than the short (Left) side. I doubt it will do.
Metal Or Plastic?

Hi there,

Would you be able to tell me whether this ships with metal or plastic cups?

Thanks,

Mike
Hi,

These bottom brackets come with metal cups.

Thanks.
