Yes as long as you can use a matching hub gear sprocket for 3/32 chain.

I am changing from Gates belt drive in order to lower the gearing.

Hi there,
You should be able to use a 3/32 chain without any issues. In terms of the internal diameter it is actually closer to 90mm than 88mm.
