Could this part function as an outer chainring in a triple chainset such as the FC-M590?

Hi there, you mention that this part can ONLY be used in a 10 speed mountain double configuration. But I don't understand why the part could not also function as an outer chainring to a 9 speed triple chainset such as the FC-M590? Please could you explain if this part could work in that configuration, assuming the middle and small rings were appropriately sized?
