is there a cheaper alternative to replace the chainrings on the FC-6800?

No. The FC-6800 chainrings are only interchangeable with certain Dura-Ace FC-9000 chainrings.

Can i install this to reduce the 50t on a 6800 compact chainset to 46t and then have 46/34. Presumably shimano don't
Yes, it will physically bolt on, but shifting will probably be out.
