Finally it's here, the worlds finest quality dynamo hub is now available to fit narrower 73mm OLN - 8mm Axle diameter Brompton forks!

The Schmidt Dynamo front hub or SON (Schmidt's Original Nabendynamo) offers significantly less drag than tyre driven dynamos.
Further benefits include reliability & ultra long life (designed to give 50,000 kilometres minimum), the fact it's sealed from the elements & unaffected by corrosion, no possibility of slippage on the tyre unlike a sidewall dynamo, and once fitted, it's always there.

Made by Wilfried Schmidt Maschinenbau in Tubingen, Germany, the hub is quiet and reliable.
Though sealed, the unit is serviceable if returned to Schmidt (through us).
The hub powers several different headlights including Schmidt's own E6 and both Lumotec and Lumotec Oval Plus headlamps as well as taillights made by Busch & Muller in Germany, and modified by Schmidt for use with the SON.

This version of the hub is designed for 16" to 24" wheels.

Weight 640g inc. Allen Key ended skewer included, power output 6V 3W.

Spade terminals sit on RIGHT side when fitted to bike.

Must NOT be built radially.

Prosvery reliable
I had one fitted to my 2010 Brompton and it's been in daily 'always-on' service. I'd estimate it's done around 15,000 miles and has outlasted 3 front and 2 rear lights. Very happy with it

How does the drag compare to the SP SV8 and SV9?
By

I just had the SP SV8 installed on my Brompton, and I must say the drag is pretty noticeable (it also seems pretty noisy). Do you have any exact data (as opposed to user impressions) of how severe the drag is compared to this, or to the SV9?
Hello, I’m afraid we don’t have this data on hand and suggest you contact the manufacture directly for further information.

How easy is it to replace it with the standard brommie front wheel with this Son? using the same spokes and the rest etc. Will I need expert skills to do it or can a generalist do it himself?
You will require different spokes, the hub dimensions are different.
We would recommend using a professional wheel builder to eliminate any possible issues; we do not recommend wheel building to a general home mechanic.
You could also purchase the pre built wheel - https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/brompton-wheels/?order=price+descending&brand=son

Road Bike

Is it possible to put this on a road bike or flat bar road bike? If so what else will you need? If not will any dynamo hub fit?
Hi,

This hub will not fit as it uses a narrower OLN spacing to fit Brompton folding bikes. Any of the hubs that are not listed as specific for a certain bike will have an OLN of 100mm which is standard and therefore will fit a road bike.

Thanks.
