ProsMetallurgy, design, resilience, braze-ons.
I have now ridden this frame set a bit over 100 miles, and am very pleased. This frame has beautuful welds, amenities in all the right places without un-needed weight, and handles beautifully. There is a rough patch of road on my commute, and it feels much less so on this frame. I attribute that to the well thought out heat treatment and tube design - it is resilient and responsive while still being sturdy, which is an engineering dilemma that is difficult to balance. Great attention to detail over decades of design is to be credited. I have noticed a 25% increase in speed compared to the heavy straight-guage non-heat treated 4130 chromoly frame that I rode previously. Whether you tour, commute, ride rail trails or haul groceries, this is an amazing bike frame. Elegant and a joy to ride!

Dented chainstay close to chainring
By David Bugeja
03 Dec 2017
Dear Sir,
I purchased a Thorn Sherpa frame and fork way back in January 2009. I did the bike build myself but hardly ever used the bike - less than 500 kilometres in all.
Eventually, I dismantled the bike and stored all of the components against that time when I'd finally end up rebuilding the bike from scratch in order to use for some serious touring.
I unpacked the frame today and immediately noticed that there is an elliptical dent on the right chainstay close to the bottom bracket shell. The dent measures approximately six centimetres longitudinally along the full length of the ellipse. This dent starts approximately three centimetres away from the bottom bracket shell.
My question: Is this a design feature in order to accommodate the smallest chainring or is the frame flawed?
I look forward to your reply. I will not attempt rebuilding the bike until I know more about this.
Regards
David Bugeja
