A worthwhile mod

ConsFiddly to fit
ProsVery strong once fitted. Bit pricey for what it is.
I’ve used a few of these on my own Brompton, and also recommend to customers whose bikes I service. The fitting issues described by others are correct, but the solutions are easy. If you’re fitting a new mudguard, you may need to drill out the riveted mudguard flap too. Once fitted, makes the entire rear structure rock solid and able to take any hard punishment. (ie.when folding in a hurry to catch a train)

ConsTricky installation, no castor wheel, have to modify a little
ProsStrong result
Great upgrade, having broken a few rear guards over the years. But takes some working out to fit. You need to pre-bend the end a bit to make the last rear holes fit. Also, as there is no castor wheel, I had to drill out the rivet on my existing castor wheel, and then you have to enlarge the hole with a drill again so that it will fit the supplied axle. Also, keep an eye on the order of washers between existing mudguard mount and brake callipers. And remember, the new reinforcement bar tab will replace one of the washers to make everything align properly with holes. All a bit fiddley, but rock solid result.

ConsNon-trivial fitting
ProsDurable quality
This seems fairly robust, but requires some fitting.

You will need to remove two rivets (in the mudguard wheel and the mudguard flap). A drill is easiest for this.

It's best to remove the entire back wheel of the Brompton before fitting. I tried to avoid this step and paid for it!

Attach the mudguard and the reinforcement to the frame (via the brake mount) before attaching the reinforcement to the mudguard. Once attached to the mudguard, the tension makes it hard to attach to the brake mount.

The original brompon mudguard wheel does not immediately fit the reinforcement mount. The internet reports that widening the hole in the centre of the wheel to 10mm using a drill solves the problem.

Alternative to drilling the coaster wheel
By
22 Nov 2022
Instead of having to drill my original coaster wheel (L-type mudguard) to fit this product, do you stock a coaster that's ready out of the box?
Hi
Thank you for your enquiry. Unfortunately there isn't an item oven ready as it were for this product, I'm afraid that some drilling will be required to fit this product.
