I bought this 5 speed freewheel to replace a worn out 7 speed that had been incorrectly fitted to a vintage Dawes touring frame. After re-dishing the wheel and some fiddling with spindle spacers it fits and shifts perfectly and has a fashionably load click.

Useful purchase.

My old Peugeot had a five speed freewheel which was a little reluctant to shift with friction levers.
This new freewheel with its modern contoured teeth was such a remarkable improvement that I wish I had bought one years ago.
The increase from 24teeth to 28 also flattened the hills just a little bit

Good solid "retro" 5 speed freewheel, similar to other review as I had a old 1970s Claud Butler frame that had 120mm rear hub. Fitted like a glove! Bought back memories from that era.

I recently fitted one of these to my vintage Claud Butler when the Shimano replacement for the worn out orginal proved too wide. (Changing into 5th/10th was difficult in consequence.) The Sunrace immediately solved this problem and is great in use: smooth shifting and strong. Reviews on the internet said it was a bit noisy but good quality and I think this is bang on. In fact, I don't mind the noise: reminds me of the 1980s!

Fit with vintage Claud Butler

This is really an answer to another question. The Campag hub on early Claud Butler Dalesman and Ladydale which is marked England 1370 by 24.BSC is indeed English thread and accepts this freewheel perfectly (5 thou difference from ISO)

Can I use this Sunrace screw on freewheel with my old Campag hub?

You have a Sunrace screw on 5 speed freewheel, to 28 teeth. I want to replace the Regina Oro I 've just removed from the wheel and keep the same gearing. The wheel is original to my 1982 Claud Butler Dalesman. The hub is a Campag and says on it "England 1370 x24.BSC". I believe that the former number is the diameter and the latter the threads per inch. Will your Sunrace fit my hub? Thanks.

Sadly we cannot confirm this for certain- it sounds like your Campag hub is English threaded in which case this should work- however it is more common for them to be Italian threaded which would mean this freewheel will not suit.

Width / Spacing

I have an old Raleigh with a 6sp Shimano TZ20 and there is a chain line problem when on the smallest cog. Can you let me know the comparative widths and cog spacings between the Shimano 6sp and the SunRace 5sp.

I am hoping to cure the issue by going to 5sp.

What is the stack height (i.e. the total width)?

I want to know the stack height (the total width of this). So I want to know if my rear dropout is big enough or if it is to small.

From back to front is 30mm but the back is recessed by approx 1mm so from the hub to the outside is effectively 29mm RT

Width difference between 5/6/7 speed freewheels

Hi, I need a replacement freewheel for an old Dawes Galaxy. This should fit, but wondered if the 6 or 7 speed options you have are the same width or wider? I am limited by narrow 120mm OLD rear drop outs and know a 5 speed definitely fits OK. I think 7 speed won't but 6 speed might. Can you advise?

6 and 7 will be significanly wider, 5 and 6 sprocket spacing is almost the same so the total will be much wider, 7 in narrower sprocket spacing but not enough even to be as little width as 6.

Shimano 5 speed uniglide 1970s hub

Looking for a 5 speed style cassette for a Shimano 600 120mm uniglide hub, wondering if this would fit as the hub take a cassette not a threaded freewheel?

Eagle ICG freewheel

I'm trying to replace my broken 5 speed non index freewheel off a Falcon racer. The old eagle ICG freewheel screwed onto the hub and was removed using a 2 notched tool. Can you advise if this freewheel will fit . Thanks

Although this freewheel requires a splined fixing/removal tool it will share the same thread so should thread onto your hub without any issues.

5 Speed Threaded Freewheel

Hi there.

I have an Everest threaded freewheel that I'm looking to replace. Given they both hve a threaded mount is the main difference on this SunRace freewheel the extraction element i.e. it's Shimano rather than Suntour 2 prong?

Also what chain would you recommend for this freewheel?

Hi,

The threading will be the same between these two freewheels so the only difference would be the different tool required for removal. Any 3/32" 5/6spd chain would be suitable for use with this freewheel.
