I recommend this product
ConsA tad expensive (worth it)
ProsQuality , precision, reliability
I've fitted them to my Surly LHT and must say I'm confident with my gear shifting now. Safe in the knowledge that if I lose indexing in the middle of nowhere I can simply switch to friction shift and enjoy the rest of the tour. A superb engineered bit of kit. Pricey but as I say buy once cry once.

Consmounting bolt can bend
ProsDura Ace quality, lighter than brifter, unaffected by rain
I bought this set a few years back from SJS. Back then we didn't have much more economical Sturmey Archer version so you could choose either Paul's or this one. I was satisfied with this. I no longer own these but it survived three tours around some European countries as the set is less affected by rain and other elements. The only drawback is that the long bolts are kind of soft - one bolt is used to fit the lever and also mounting the band to the handlebar so it can go wrong if not careful. The price has gone up significantly since I bought them so today these are much less attractive.
Nice Job!

ConsPerhaps a little expensive,
ProsWork great, fitted in minutes
These shifters are a far more reliable option than pod style shifters, the rear is friction or indexed and works well in either mode, the front also works like a dream and allows you to trim the derailleur, but I suppose if you are looking for these, you already know that! Will probably buy these for my MTB as well.

ProsPositive,smooth.
I bought these shifters for my recumbent . They take up less room than twisters or shifters. They work great with my shimano rear derailuer and sram front. The shifters are basic but do the job. Smooth positive shifting even when wearing gloves.

ConsFixings slightly crude
ProsSimple, neat, robust
I had got tired of the frequency with which shifters failed on my daily hack bike. Bought the thumbies to work on a flat barred road bike and so far they have worked well, simple to set up, and smooth and positive in use. I am hopeful that these nice simple shifters will work well long term.

Will These Work With An 8 Speed Deore Xt Shifter And Block On A Mtb?

Hi,

You would need to use them in the friction mode setting, but they would work with your 8spd set up.

Thanks.
Friction/Indexed? Use With Ultegra 9Sp Cass &Dble Front?

I have modified my 16 year old custom racer to accommodate my now 68 yr. old body by changing to a straight bar from dropped handlebars(more upright position) to which I've added a pair of straightbar brake levers.
I've been using a couple of Sachs "New Success" 8sp downtube shifters that somebody gave me which work moderately well(the indexing is not exact)with the Shimano 9spd cassette(which is matched with narrow Hyperglide chain if that makes any difference), but riding in the streets of Paris is a little hairy, always having to reach down, so I prefer to go to bartop shifters. I realize now that a comb. shifter/brake lever would have been the most practical solution but don't want to change things again.
The order of things going from the outside towards the inside is at present: grips, then brake lever brackets. I plan to put the shifters inboard(next to)of the brake levers. I don't see a problem with that. What do you think?
Hi,

From what you've said these seem to be a perfect option and should be the best solution. They should mount in most places on the bars, you'll just have to be careful that they have the necessary clearance to use their full range of movement.

Thanks.
Thumb Shifters
By

The thumb shifters appear to be the oldstyle barend shifter I used to use on my tourer, they look to have the lever in the centre that you can turn to disengage the indexing if the indexing fails, is that the case.

Regards Barry Mordin
Hi,

Yes these can be used with or without the Indexing engaged.

Thanks.
