Great old school bar foam. Not easy to fit particularly with brake cables under, but a lot of lubricant fixed that.

Had a set of these from Halfords which were a lot cheaper but split in no time. These are more expensive but have them on another Tandem and they do last so the old saying works ....you get what you pay for !!

I recommend this product
I bought a set of these in 1984 and they are now getting a bit thin, so I bought another set. I hope the last as long as the originals ?? As expected a pain to fit but with loads of Fairy Liquid they eventually slipped on, although I did have to trim an inch off the end. I may have used a little too much liquid as they still twist in a couple of places. Hopefully they will eventually fully dry out.

ConsSome care and effort needed to fit, brake levers have to be removed.
ProsComfortable, long lasting, good looking
This is the third set of grab-ons that I have fitted to the same bike, and I am pleased that they are still available. Takes a bit of effort to get them on, but well worth it. Comfortable grip, long lasting, far better than any handlebar tape that I have tried. I use hair lacquer to lubricate fitting these, but you have to be quick!

ProsI like the feel
Like the feel of these grips. The thickness suits me fine - similar to double tape wrapping. I found them fairly easy to slide on my Nitto noodle bars after I soaked them in hot water - no soap used.

ProsCheap, comfy, long!
Bought these to use on my Jones Loop H bars, as a cheaper alternative to the extra long Jones or ESI grips.
They’re a bit squashier than the aforementioned grips, but very comfy and er, grippy!
Only used them a few times, so I can’t comment on longevity. Although the quality seems very good.
Give them a try! ????

ProsHigh quality material
Some articles are well designed and become successful, are fashionable and fade away. Grab-on foam grips are so simple and the quality of the material is so high they are amongst the very best at any price. Especially good for long distance touring and dampening road vibration through the bars.
Time tested - And the best thing to put on your handlebars!

ConsNothing significant. Use liquid soap and water to get them on
ProsUnsurpassed material quality and comfort
Grab on grips have been made in the USA since the 1970s and they are the most comfortable and highest quality grips you can buy anywhere. They are not that expensive either!

It takes a bit of dishwashing soap and water to get the grips on and a few days to dry completely in place, like the instructions say.

My first set of Grab On foam grips I bought for my 10 speed handlebars back in the late 70s and its amazing that even today they still make these great grips in America!

Don´t believe or listen to any negative or grouchy reviews for a minute! It´s simply not true what the negative reviews say and I think they were written by incompetent cyclists who just have no idea. So ignore them.

You have to use liquid soap and water to get them on, but really, how hard is it. Maybe a bit tough at first but use enough soap and they eventually go on - and they are great!! No handlebar tape can match the comfort of Grab On foam grips, especially for a touring bike.

A very comfortable grip which is incredibly challenging to fit over cables in addition to the curves of a drop bar. The benefits when compared to well wrapped thick tape with gel pads appear negligible.

ProsComfortable and long lasting
For dropped handlebars. It's very comfortable and cuts down vibration from the road to almost nothing. Very long lasting too. It seems to be only available from SJS these days.

I have used grab on since 1983 have applied it to my day cycle, my touring cycle and my tandem. It is far more superior to similar makes. My day cycle has covered 80,000 miles with only two changes of grab-on. My touring cycle has survived Israel at 48oC, Corfu and Corsica, Turkey was warm as well at 50oC. Local touring was good and my hands were warm at -10oC.
Works as padding but impossible to install inner pieces.

ConsI defy you to get all 4 pieces on without slitting them!
ProsFirm enough for good control, and very comfy, once you manage to install them
I suffer from RSI and vibration-related problems in my hands so I thought this stuff would be just what I need for my Dawes Galaxy tourer with Randonneur bars. However I found it impossible to slide the inner pieces into place (despite copious liquid soap). In the end I slit them and taped over the foam with leather tape, which both looks and feels better. Unfortunately standard reels of tape are 6" too short so I had to improvise, including carving and shaving off slices to shape round the hoods and under the brakes and to thin the ends. All in all what should have been straightforward became a major job, but the end result is worth it - the comfiest bars of any bike!

ConsPutting it on the bars
ProsComfort and long life
Very good stuff. I dont think anyone else sells it these days. Use Fairy Liquid to work the foam on the bars with a dry tea towel. Apply Fairy directly on the inside of the foam with your fingers and on to the bars. Attach the gear and brake cables on the outside of the bars with a few cable ties.

ConsAbsolute b*gg*r to get on
ProsTough, comfy
Foam was tougher than I expected, ans is very comfy on handlebars. you will need LOTS of washing up liquid, time and physical effort to get these on. Make sure the bars are completely clean before starting. Swearing helps. But the end result is worth it, just hope I don't have to do this again too soon!

ProsThick and comfortable and far more for your money than the THIN stuff sold now...
I have been fitting 'Grab-On' to my various cycles over many years and find it comfortable. I recently purchased this stuff from SJS as its the only place to stock it now in England... (as far as I can tell) I recently put this on a new touring cycle I am building up. I also had some left over from the past to fit. Has not changed...still good!

ConsSuper comfortable, and lasts a long time.
ProsHard to get on - use soap and water on the bars and inside the foam. Relatively expensive.
I've been using this for years and think it is still the most comfortable handlebar covering for touring and general day to day cycling. Ideal for dropped bars. However it is difficult to use with STI and aero levers because brake and gear cables normally run under the handlebar tape. A simple and straightforward workaround when using Grab On is to use fairly wide black cable ties to attach the brake and gear cables outside the Grab On, in a position that doesn't interfere with your fingers. This approach looks neat, is easy to do and lasts.

ConsToo thick for tops
ProsThick, grips bars, very comfortable
I use these for the hooks, below the brakes, with cork tape above the brakes and just one turn below. One set of sleeves does two bikes. Used like this weight on the hands falls on the thick foam but the hand isn't held back reaching for the brake lever from the hooks. If you are pressing into a strong wind, being comfortable on the hooks makes a great difference.

They feel great to me, much nicer than gel pads under tape.

To lubricate inside for fitting Sheldon Brown suggested isopropyl alchohol (tape head cleaner or buy at chemists) and this has worked very well for me.

ConsSpoil the proportion of sexy bars. Expensive!
ProsFeel good
I'm an old git approaching my 50th year so often suffer from numbness in my hands during longer rides. I'm not sure these things help, but they sure don't make it any worse. Also, if ANYHTING is going to help, surely its nice spongy bars isn't it? To summarise they feel great, and I thoroughly recommend them, but they are a bit 'thick', which makes the bars look a bit Micky Mouse. I prefer the look of the thin foam grabon, but prefer the feel of these.

Maybe you have an inner diameter of 30 mm ?

Thanks.
Hi,

Unfortunately we're not going to have anything that will fit such a large diameter, as all bike handlebars top out at 23.8mm.

Thanks.

Modern Drop Handbar Brake And Shifter Configuration
By
03 Jun 2014
Hi,
Could you tell me if this product is compatible with modern drop handbar brake and shifter configurations and also, would you have a picture showing it can be done ? The matter is that I have a new road bike with standard bar tape and despite I've added gel under it, it will never be the comfort of Grabon. Thanks.
Hi,

I should be compatible with modern road bars an shifter combinations, you would have to remove the shifter to fit it though. You would also need to make sure you have any cables already routed underneath it before you apply them. We don't have a picture of them fitted I'm afraid.

Thanks.
