My AW hub had developed excess play, noise and friction, because it had been used for many years with undersize ball bearings! These had actually worn a groove in the proper race on the driver, though not in the ball race. Replacing the driver and using correct size balls has transformed the hub.

The driver I received, although sealed in the manufacturer's bag, had a little corrosion, but not on any bearing surface. I cleaned it up with wire wool, and it's been entirely satisfactory.
