If you want a reliable, consistent, durable braking system for general road usage, the Sturmey XFD is ideal. Though not as powerful as rim or disk brakes, it has the advantage of being fully enclosed and so performance is not affected by rain, dirt and grit. Your rims will not wear out and the pads are very long lasting. After commuting for a year, I've not had to adjust the brake in any way and it performs as when new. Might seem pricey at first, but requires no maintenance or frequent pad replacement.
