The Koolstop Tyre Mate is an articulated tool, with a comfortable grip, for installing really tight tyres.
The articulated end uses the rigid piece against the rim edge as a fulcrum while the hinged end lifts the bead up and over the opposite edge of the rim.
This is a great tool for dealing with difficult tyres without causing any damage to the tube, tyre or rim.

Due to the straight design of the jaws, these are best suited to road/un-treaded tyres as there is not the clearance over larger tyres.

Based on the earlier design Simson Tyre Mate.

It really does what it says it does. If I can use it to get a Continental tyre on then anyone can and you also avoid the call of shame

ConsI did find it didn’t work so well on Moulton 17” tyres and Brompton 16” tyres.

ProsLight and small enough for my saddle bag.

A very useful addition to the tool kit. Seems plenty strong enough for most larger wheels/tyres.

On first use it was still a bit of a struggle to get folding tyres on but definitely better than levers and fingers. Good addition to tool bag hopefully.

After struggling for years to put Schwalbe Marathon tyres on 16” wheels, this tool really does work a treat and can have a tyre back on in under a minute, excellent!

ProsDesign, quality and strength

Struggled mounting two sets of new Marathon tyres and whilst I got three on by hand, spent hours on the fourth, destroyed my hands and failed completely (including pinching a tube)!
Ordered the tyre mate, watched an instruction video and had the tyre mounted within thirty seconds of unpacking!
Although the tool is a little long, I will make sure it accompanies me everywhere.

Wish I had bought this years ago.

ProsDoes job better than you could imagine

Fantastic tool. I had a Sun CR18, 26" rim and a 1" tyre. Whole job done in about 4 minutes. I know that it would have been almost imposssible without this tool. I am going to buy a spare, just in case i lose it/ gets knicked/ they stop making it.

ProsEasy to use one handed inexpensive

With only one working hand, I've struggled to fix punctures. This makes it easy to refit even the tightest of wire-rimmed tyres. It's so useful that I bought a spare. Some claim it's too long. I simply trimmed the handle down so it fits my saddle pouch!

Works beautifully, but too big to go in any but the largest saddlebag. If only the handle were a little shorter. I may just cut the handle down a bit.

A truly clever device, I purchased the Kool Stop Tyre Mate as I was finding it impossible to fit new Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres to my road bike. This was an absolute miracle purchase having watched the Kool Stop being demonstrated on You Tube I just had to get one and it was my purchase of the month if not the year. My thanks to SJS Cycles for stocking the Kool Stop, such a Kool Tool.

Prostight tyres solution for puncture on the go finally

juts make sure you push the opposite side into the rim centre and this is fine, otherwise you may break the grip tooth

This handy little tool is a 'third hand' when it comes to putting on tyres with a really tight fit. Make the impossible (without puncturing the tube), possible. Excellent and highly recommended.

Made changing my tyre so much easier at home. Only downside is it is too big to fit in saddle bag with usual spare tube etc ( unless you use a really big one!) and is bigger than a pump to go in jersey pocket so not idea to take with you on a ride.

Does the job but not portable. Nor can it be used to 'remove' tyres.

Not really a review of an unfamiliar product as I was merely replacing Koolstop lost on a recent ride when it fell out of my saddle bag without me realising. Wouldn't be without it and bereft when realised i'd lost it. Replaced by placing order online for it same night which shows how much I value it! Brilliant piece of kit!!

I already have more than one of these, (when they were called Simpson) one for each bike and one for the workshop. I bought this for a friend.
There are tyres I could not fit by hand but this device does it easily.

Proslight, simple, cheap and easy to use

I have been cycling for 40 years and only just discovered this tool - an absolute boon - no more pinched and inner tubes when fitting tight tire casings! If only I had known about this simple device years ago!!

The first used took me a minute oe two to get the placment of the tool right. As soon as i understood the way it worked, i was amazed...like butter..even 28 marathon plus on a 29 mtb rim...no damage at all to the rim, no way of damageing the time...everyone should own this.

Prosbrilliant at getting tyres onto rims

This is the perfect tyre lever for getting tyres on , no more pinching the innertube with standard levers , no more destroying your poor thumbs. Use this to easily pull the final sections of tyre over and into the wheels . Its especially ideal with Tubeless tyres which can be brutal to get on .
Every roadie should have one in there garage

saw this at local bike shop when had to get my son's basketball wheelchair tyres turned. they told me where to get it and its great. Really easy to use and takes so much hassle out of putting a tyre back on. Use on both his day chair and basketball chair. Came really quickly and exactly as described.

This tool is actually better than I anticipated. Took me seconds to pull that last segment of tyre over the rim - no pinching, no problems (and that is with the Gatorskin tyres) - would definitely recommend and, I now carry with me on rides ... just in case!

Will this tool remove a wire bead 700 x 25 tyre?

Rim is tubeless conpatible but fitted with wire bead tyre making it difficult to get normal lever under wire bead even when bead is pushed of 'shoulder'.

Will it work with 1.75” tyres?

I note your warning that “Due to the straight design of the jaws, these are best suited to road/un-treaded tyres as there is not the clearnace over larger tyres.”
I need this tool to fit 20” x 1.75” Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres to an Alexrims DX 2418 rim. The tool should still do the trick, shouldn’t it?

We do not think a tyre wider than 40mm/1.5" is really suitable.
